Memorial Tribute to...
Eddie D. Smith, Sr
June 8, 1946 - February 28, 2025
On June 8, 1946, a remarkable life began within the bustling walls of a three-bedroom home at 755
Pebble Street, Macon, Georgia. Eddie D. Smith, Sr., the cherished firstborn of the late Mattie Mae
Myers Smith and Rev. Jack Smith, Jr., entered a world of deep family roots and profound spiritual
influence. He was a beacon of light, a melody of hope, and a testament to the power of faith and
service.
Pastor Smith’s early life was a symphony of influences. He grew up immersed in the rich musical
traditions of Beulah Baptist Church, where the harmonies of the Morning Star Quartet, founded by
his father, great uncle, and Robert Thomas, resonated deeply within him. This early exposure ignited
a lifelong passion for music, a gift he would later weave seamlessly into his ministry.
His intellectual journey led him from Ballard-Hudson High School to Fort Valley State College (now
University), where he earned a bachelor’s degree in education and a master’s in media services. His
thirst for knowledge was insatiable, driving him to pursue further studies in church and religious
disciplines, enriching his understanding, and strengthening his calling.
The seeds of leadership were sown early when, around 1954, he and his cousins formed the Morning
Star Juniors, a testament to their shared passion and youthful dedication. This early endeavor
foreshadowed his profound calling to preach, which he answered on April 26, 1969. In July 1972, he
accepted the mantle of leadership at the historic Macedonia Baptist Church, where he would serve
with unwavering devotion.
Pastor Smith was a multifaceted man, gifted with a rare ability to blend his passions. He was a
teacher, a leader, a musician, a preacher, and a compassionate listener. He possessed a unique talent
for connecting with people through his love for music, becoming a recording artist and using his
voice to uplift and inspire.
A visionary leader, he instilled a spirit of empowerment within his congregation and the wider
community. He championed financial prudence, leading the church to burn mortgages for
significant projects, including the Macedonia Family Life Center, a beacon of community outreach
and a model for churches across Georgia.
His commitment to service extended beyond the church walls. He served as a City Council member,
a two-term member of the Bibb County Board of Education, and held leadership positions in
organizations such as the United Way of Macon and the American Cancer Society.
For over two decades, he shared a loving partnership with his beloved wife, Mrs. Martha K. Smith,
whom he married on November 26, 2000. Their union was a testament to love, faith, and unwavering
support.
Pastor Emeritus Eddie D. Smith, Sr. leaves behind a legacy of faith, service, and unwavering dedication.
His life was a testament to the transformative power of love, music, and a deep connection to God. He
touched countless lives, leaving an indelible mark on his community and all who had the privilege of
knowing him. Though he has transitioned from this earthly realm, his spirit lives on in the hearts of
those he inspired. May his memory be a blessing and his soul find eternal peace.
